Talking Point

Hello gorgeous! How are you ? It is Ifa with you today, enjoying a rare sunny interlude.

Did any of you buy any Valentine's range this year ? I usually do because I love the pink and the blues but more often than not, I use it for something else. Not this time. Today, I am going to share with you a late Valentine's layout.

Motifs come and go. We've had a few enduring ones such as birds and butterflies. We have also had, in my opinion, downright weird with moustache. One of the motifs that is currently very popular is the speech bubble. Here is a selection from Sarah's Cards :

I love them all especially that 12x12 mask that I am earmarking for a future purchase. In the mean time,  I wanted to see how I could make speech bubbles a feature in my layout.

I would normally hand draw a variety of speech bubbles but this time, I have used an EK Success Punch. You could also easily draw speech bubbles in MS Word.

I wanted to have a couple of love birds having a conversation so I started by sketching some branches on the background cardstock.

I added some stamped XOXO applied using foam thickers.  As X and O are symmetrical, I didn't have to worry about reversing the letters. I simply stuck them down on a block, applied ink and stamped.

I went over the branches with a permanent black pen before colouring them in with some spray ink, applied with a brush. I added a couple of birds, cut out of patterned paper.

I typed up my dialogue on my trusted typewriter. You need to leave out a lot of space around each section text! Then I punched them out with the speech bubble punch.  I also coloured them using spray ink spplied with a brush.

I also scattered some small hearts and wood veneer on the tree.

This is my finished layout, a tribute to my dearest on the occasion of our 22nd wedding anniversary.

It was refreshing to use pen, paint and punches to make my speech bubbles but that mask is still calling out to me.  Maybe a speech bubble mask will make an appearance next month ?

Do you think the speech bubble will be popular ? What is your favourite motif ?

Boy crazy!

Hi Tracy here with my monthly post. This month I have been playing with some of the new MME Boy Crazy collection. There are so many great papers in this range, I couldn't decide which to choose, so I decided to go for the 6x6 pad, and that way I would have two of each design. I also adored the stamp set in the collection, and I can see me using the chevron and the stars in the set quite a lot.

First I started by creating this layout.

I made a large chevron mask by cutting the design into a laminating pouch and using a grey ink, slightly darker than my background cardstock, I inked through it to create a subtle chevron pattern across the center of the page. I  used a piece of sequin waste as a mask for the small inked circles.
The chipboard banners and buttons are from the Decorative buttons pack.

I then made a few masculine cards using the stamp set and some stickers from the 12x12 sticker sheet.

Thanks for stopping by.

Its a Farm Life!

Hi everyone, its Vanessa here. This month, I am using papers from the Farm Girl range by October Afternoon.  I ordered the washi tape from the range too and I know its such a popular medium to use at the moment, the girls have used it in their projects in fabby and ingenious ways, but I really struggle with it!  So ...... I thought - have another go, and challenge yourself. :)

Woosh is my first layout, where I've used the tape with twine to make some flags. The tree is hand drawn and cut out.  After a little bit of misting, lots of other little pieces cut out from the papers are added.

3 in a Row is next and I as you can see, I've used a couple of strips of washi at the top, but I have also covered some "do it yourself" thickers with the tape, inked the edges and then used glossy accents over the top.

Finally, some little cards for Easter.

Thanks for looking. :)

Cute v's Funky

Hi all.

This month I chose some cute products from the shop and thought I would try to make contrasting style layouts to show you that even the sweetest of papers can be used for different styles.

My first layout I chose to make cute using a lovely picture of my neice taken at nursary, I used lots of layering on this page to create depth and added lots of roll up flowers.

Here is a closer look at the flowers..

For my second page I used some Kraft cardstock for my background and kept the page more simple, I wanted a more arty feel to this page. I chose a great mask from the Hueys collection and a mist to create my background.

Here is a closer look at the detail I added to the mask..

Products used;

Studio Calico - Mister Huey's Opaque White
Studio Calico - Mister Huey's Circle Graph Mask
My Little Shoebox Collection - Vintage Shop
October Afternoon - Farm Girl Alphabet
My Minds Eye - Lost and found - Ruby Buttons
Liquid Pearls - Mint Green

Cant wait to see you all soon at the retreat in March :) Love Claire xx

Secrets, secrets........

What an intriguing title eh?!

Well, when thinking about my blog work this month,  I decided that I would cover hidden journaling - as an A4 scrapper, the smaller paper surface means I often find it hard to include the all-important story without compromising my design, so I often turn to hidden or secret journaling to ensure my story is documented within the page.

However, there's a bit more behind my title too.......
When my order arrived, it contained this little vanishing ink pen. I was confused by its arrival as I was sure I hadn't ordered it.....however the mystery was soon solved when I realised that one of the fantastic new functions of the shopping cart on the revamped shop website is that it keeps anything you place in your bag until you check out, even if you don't make a purchase on that day, and pop back in between. Before the new site went live, the DT had a little play and test - and I must have randomly added the pen to my shopping cart when trying all the new features out...and forgotten about it! So I set about thinking of ways my little "surprise" could help me in my crafting.....

Some of you may know that 2013 is going to be a pretty big year for me, as this Summer I'll be saying "I do" to the very lovely Mr T. The countdown is flying past, plans are in full swing, and I feel it's important to document all our hard work and preparation along the way to look back on in the future. My first page this month is about our Save the Dates, and what a massive project they became!
My supplies included:
papers from the new MME Collectable Range
This gorgeous heart kraft paper from Elle's Studio - so perfect for our colour scheme I ordered more than one ;)

I began by creating the pocket for my hidden journaling, which was going to be written on tags. Wanting to work quickly and easily, I grabbed a roll of washi tape that was on my desk. I cut three strips long enough to cover three sides of my photo, and folded them inwards on themselves along the strip, to create a hinge effect.

I placed the folded strips on the back of my photo, leaving one edge free to pop my tags in, and then stuck it straight onto my page - one side of the washi providing the adhesive. The three sealed edges now created a pocket to hold my tags in place.
I decorated the tags by punching a bird shape from them, then adding a circle of patterned paper and a number from a packet of Jillybean Kraft alphas to each to indicate the order they should be read.

The next step was the first time my vanishing ink marker came into play - to draw guide lines for my journaling on the back of each tag. The pen worked great - although I did find I had to work quickly as it doesn't take long for it to disappear.
I also used it to draw a guide line to use the stickers in my title;
as a guide for creating a stamped border;
and to make a hand-written guide for some stitched title work:

This little stamp in the Elle's Studio set is so usable, you may be seeing a lot of it on my pages over the next few months! The two different colours were simply achieved by stamping twice without reinking.

And to complete the page, a little cluster of embellishments made from punched shapes using the papers, a Jenni Bowlin resin bow, a Basic Grey wooden button and some ribbon.

My second page documents the menu tasting afternoon we had....it took forever to whittle down the beautiful menu to just three choices, but we got there eventually!

Additional supplies to my first page include:

In her last post,  Helen used washi tape to create a concertina effect with her photos to fit more on her page, which sparked my hidden journaling idea here. I wanted to create almost a paper-chain of hearts that could be folded and unfolded on my page to reveal our chosen menu for the Big Day.

I began by printing each of the courses onto A4 matt photo paper, each in a heart shape as a cutting guide.
I then stuck them in a line on to some of the patterned paper, using the vanishing ink to make guide lines to ensure they were all straight - if they weren't lined up they wouldn't sit neatly in a pile on my finished page.

I roughly cut the hearts out, leaving them joined together; concentrating on the pointed lower parts but leaving the tops for the next step. I made a firm crease on the area that joined each heart so that they could be folded on top of each other.
Once I'd folded the two outer hearts inwards on top of the centre one, I trimmed any visible excess paper and cut the tops all together - this made sure that the heart would look like one neat shape on my layout.
Flipping the journaling over, I ran a strip of washi tape right along the back across where the folded creases were between each heart to provide a bit of reinforcement for them.
I attached it to my page and decorated the front with my title and a bit of ribbon to hold the journaling shut.

You can just see one of the new Amy Tan Veneer shapes peeping out from behind the heart - I must confess I'd actually ordered them for my March blog post, but they arrived when I was making this page and when I saw this tag, I thought it was perfect for tying all the colours in the layout together and acted as a nice visual anchor for the heart.

It also provided some inspiration for my date and location information at the bottom left hand of my page, which I created by layering lots of different washi tapes on top of each other.
No page of mine would be complete without  little cluster of embellishments, which were popped on top of a strip of the pink reverse of the Elle's Studio kraft paper. I also hand cut a few circles from the MME "Hello" paper and slipped them underneath the strip to create a soft, romantic border.

Thank you for popping by, we would love to see your hidden journaling ideas! Pop a link to your work in the comments section :)
